Traditional Bhakti is the yoga of devotion and is based on meditation. Bikram Yoga Performed in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent to 50 percent humidity, a series of 26 postures is repeated with each class in the same order. Bikram is designed to stretch muscles, ligaments, and tendons and to replenish the entire body with fresh, oxygenated blood. Classes are 90 minutes. It recognizes that each student has a unique practice so its been designed to blend postures, breathing, and meditation techniques suited for each individual. Practices range from slow movement through postures to more vigorous series that promote sweating out toxins. Iyengar Yoga Focuses on detail and fine-tuning alignments of the muscular and skeletal system. Each class revolves around ancient wisdom, goes through a Vinyasa-style series, and includes meditation, chanting, and uplifting music. Kundalini Yoga Meant to awaken the sleeping potential that lies in all of us, Kundalini is depicted as a snake coiled at the base of the spine. Its energy inspires creative and spiritual awakening by opening our chakras, or points of physical or spiritual energy, through a series of postures, breathing patterns, and mantras. Mysore Yoga A sequence of Ashtanga postures that is built on practice upon practice.. My husband laughed at the boxes of granola

When I began to plan a trip to Kenya, I knew my elegant “Out of Africa” fantasies would have to wait. We were going to Kenya as a family, and traveling with two boys, ages seven and eleven, pretty much precludes “elegant” anything. Still, I had hopes for close encounters with big cats, and sundowners with my husband while we gazed over vast expanses of savannah, perhaps with a picturesque giraffe in the distance. And in fact while we did not attain Baroness Von Blixen levels of sophistication, we did manage something almost as wonderful: our family safari bridged that sometimes painful gap between “family trip” and “vacation,” and resulted in what our older son described as “the most epic vacation ever.” A few things to keep in mind if you’re planning a safari with children: Self-Clinching nuts for sale • Get your meds, even if you think you don’t need them. We all got yellow fever shots and took anti-malaria pills. We didn’t see any mosquitoes, but we took the pills anyway, because who wants to bring home malaria as a safari souvenir? • Avoid the “National Geographic effect”: yes, kids love those nature shows, but make sure to explain how long photographers wait for those astonishing photos. After two days of safari, my eight-year-old said “I want carnage! When will a crocodile bring down a zebra?” Too many episodes of “Planet Earth” had taken their toll. • Leave the checklist at home. You might see leopards, rhinos, and cheetahs…and you might not. Remind your kids (and yourself) that you’re not in a zoo or a wildlife enclosure. My eight-year-old never saw his zebra-crocodile death match, but nevertheless, every day he said “that’s amazing” at least once. • Bring snacks.

My husband laughed at the boxes of granola bars and fruit strips I packed, but when your first safari drive leaves before dawn, and it’s three hours before breakfast, tossing your kids a snack will ensure that they don’t become wild beasts, even as they watch the wildebeests. • Prepare for a lot of down time. Morning game drives usually start at dawn and return around 9:30; the second drive of the day starts in the late afternoon. That leaves many empty hours to fill—and nowhere to go. If you have an iPad, load it with games, movies, and books; bring cards, drawing pads, and journals to record the day’s adventures. (If your kids are like mine, the daily journal entry may require daily chocolate bribes.) We left the laptop at home because it’s heavy, and there are strict weight allowances on the small transfer flights from camp to camp. • Bring those point-and-shoots. If it’s possible, buy or borrow extra cameras and binoculars so that each child has one to use on the trip. When you’re having a spiritual moment gazing into the eyes of an ancient elephant, the last thing you want to hear is your kids bickering about who gets to use the camera. • Practice stillness. No, that’s not advice from yoga class. Loud voices and sudden movements startle the wildlife. Sometimes the animals will run away, but sometimes they run towards, and believe me, you do not want an elephant or a buffalo charging towards your jeep. • Prepare to be amazed. Our trip wasn’t exactly “Out of Africa,” but we did manage sundowners on the terrace, complete with giraffes grazing in the distance; we saw a cheetah chase and catch a gazelle (thus satisfying my blood-thirsty son); there were elephants, lions, rhinos, and spectacular birds. It was, indeed, epic, and we are already planning our return trip. See our Adventures in Antarctica slideshow

See our Adventures in Antarctica slideshow. It would have been worth noting, when we signed up for the “Nimrod Centennial Expedition” to Antarctica, that Sir Ernest Shackleton’s pole-seeking Nimrod expedition was a failure, and that venturing south under his name was tempting fate. But we were trying to do only what he had accomplished—in fact, only part of what he had accomplished—and not what he had aspired to do. We anticipated that with a hundred years of technological advancement, we would easily reach the hut he had built at the edge of the Ross Sea, meant to last one winter a century ago but still standing, testament to his high standards and to a climate hostile even to the microorganisms that cause rot. Before we launched at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day 2008 from the same berth in Lyttelton, New Zealand, that Shackleton had used at the same hour on January 1, 1908, we were blessed in the Anglican church where Shackleton’s party had prayed, and sang the hymn they had sung, whose Cassandra refrain asks, “Oh hear us when we cry to Thee/For those in peril on the sea.” A substantial public had gathered, including descendants of Shackleton’s crew. A brass band played and Samoyeds whose forebears had pulled Shackleton’s sledges barked as the crowd waved us off, and we were escorted out to sea by the very tugboat that had pulled the Nimrod.See the World’s Strangest Museums. Promotional material had wholesale Structural Rivets for sale touted our ship as the Spirit of Enderby, and tied onto the upper deck railing of our vessel, a small banner, the sort a laundromat might use to announce its grand opening, read Spirit of Enderby. Gigantic Cyrillic letters on the hull, by contrast, proclaimed the boat as Professor Khromov, as did the lifeboats, the maps, and the equipment on board; we entered and left ports as Professor Khromov, because that was in fact the name of the ship.

Spirit of Enderby was a flight of the enthusiastic imagination of Rodney Russ, owner of Heritage Expeditions and our trip leader. In the same advance material, there had been references to a “refurbished Russian ice-class ship,” which suggests a more active intervention than the installation of industrial blue carpeting throughout a battered Soviet research vessel from 1984—but the pretend name and the primitive accommodations seemed part of the bravado of our enterprise. (A number of far more luxurious ships sail to Antarctica, but few of them are equipped to make it through the ice to reach Shackleton’s hut.
